AN ANNUAL PRIZE TO NEEDY CHILDREN -
Each year in June, The Children of the Earth Prize is awarded at North Cape, Norway. As of 2010, the annual amount has been increased to 150.000 Norwegian kroner, equal to about 18.000 euro or 25.000 US dollars. The prize is presented to an individual or a project which, over time, has shown compassion and ability to help children that suffer somewhere in the world. Anyone may nominate candidates for this prize.

Each year, approximately
200.000 people from all over the world travel to North
Cape - the top of Europe . On the cliff overlooking
the Arctic Ocean , they can observe the works of art
that constitute The Children of the Earth monument.

Some 500 school
children from Magerøya
island in Finnmark county – where North Cape is located – participate
in the award ceremony. During the preceding days, the
prizewinner has visited all the schools and lectured
about the work being done for children in need in faraway
places. The Children of the Earth Prize was awarded for
the first time in 1989. Its background story is quite
unique. Photo © Hans
